Agriculture

Type of project: Private
Region: Bamako
Investment amount (millions CFA francs): 60 000
Investment amount (Euro): 1 526 000
Investment amount (USD): 1 755 725

The present project aims to create a production plant for printed fabric in Mali based on Malian cotton with the final product being distributed in Mali (20% of production) and in countries from the sub-region (80% of production).

Stakes:

According to the cotton quality manual of UEMOA in 2014, printed fabric imports to Mali are evaluated at more than 5,000 tons per year and nearly 15,000 tones in West Africa.
The 5,000 tons of printed fabric have an estimated value of over 120 billion FCFA in 2014 (Malian market).
The cotton industry, with production of 550,000 tons in 2015 (source: CMDT), represents 15% of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP). Around three million Malians directly or indirectly make their living from cotton cultivation.
In Mali, only 2 to 3% of the national cotton production is processed by local textile industries. That translates as around 10,000 tons out of 510,000 tons (in 2015) and the rest is exported each year to Asia and Europe.
The project will allow greater added value to be brought to Malian cotton.
The country is the 2nd or 3rd producer of cotton on the continent. It has 17 cotton ginning factories with a capacity of 575,000 tons.
Printed fabric is a current fashionable, social trend in Mali and in West Africa.

Goals:

(1) The aim of the project is to create a production unit for printed fabric using Malian cotton. The long-term objective is to replace foreign fabric imports with local production.
(2) The project will also allow various actors in the printed fabrics market to come together around one single project.

Needs:

Financing, equipment purchase, technology transfer, partnership.
